I wish there were a way to show each of you how sincere I am in telling you how much God loves you and His pursuit of your heart, and XOXO is a way I can symbolize my heart for you.
There's actually meaning behind the symbol XOXO, which we all know as hugs and kisses, but it's more than just a way to sign a friend's yearbook.
Since the middle ages when many people could not read or write, an "X" was used as a signature. People would sign important documents with the "X" which was a symbol referring to the Cross of Christ. To demonstrate sincerity and truth in signing, the person signing would kiss the "X", in the same manner Christians kissed their Bible to display their belief in Christ. The letter "X" was also used as a holy symbol and represented the Greek word for Christ.
Years later as Jewish immigrants came to the U.S., those who could not write would sign documents with an "O" so that they did not make the symbol of the cross. As time has passed though, the "O" is symbolic of someone's arms wrapped around another to symbolize a hug.
I sign with XOXO to show you how sincere I am in the love of Christ for you, sweet friend, and if I could hug you through the screen, I certainly would.
