It's a By-Product

Happiness is elusive, much like a mirage in a scorching desert. We dream and plan for ways to attain it, but just as we get to it, it's nowhere to be found, and the sadness deepens.

We're just discontent. We long for more.

Would you do me a favor?

It's a favor I have to do for myself sometimes, so I promise, I'm not going to ask something of you that I don't ask of myself.

Stop searching for happiness.

You will only find more sadness.

Here's a question from Laura Krokos at MissionalWomen.com that recently made me think:

Don't search for it.

It's not out there to be achieved or attained.  Eve didn't find it because she looked for something for herself.  Even in Eden she wasn't giving her life away, she was looking for a way to cherish her life more.  Changing our circumstances, doesn't change our hearts.

Although happiness can't be found, it does happen sometimes....

When we least expect it.

These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.  - John 15:11
I have found happiness is a by-product.

Did you see how it was a by-product in this verse?  Joy was a result of Him speaking and it's a result of Him living in our lives.  The "things" he spoken to them were about abiding in Him, the vine, abiding in His love.

When I'm not looking for it, not seeking it, there it is, I bump right into it.

A by-product of living for someone other than myself.

A by-product of giving my life away.

For Him.

I'm happy before I realize it.

Nothing else has ever satisfied me like feasting upon His goodness and His word. Nothing satisfies like seeing Him work in the everyday lives of people. The ALMIGHTY working in small, seemingly insignificant people. My heart can find no words when I run smack dab into Him at work in the life of another.

My joy overflows when little hearts are impacted by Him.  My joy overflows when I hear my children praying their own prayers, not mine.

Happiness abounds within my soul when I see someone "get it", when I see their spiritual light bulb go off about something for the first time.

For it is God's work that makes me happy, not my own.   He came that I may have joy.

My friends, where have you bumped into happiness?

Hi Amy,
I found you on Missional Women and wanted to say hello. I love how you put that happiness is a by-product of living for Jesus. Thank you for sharing. Blessings!
